Overview
Derived fields allow you to extend existing Insights data source fields into new, custom-calculated fields that can be used across all of your reports. By combining fields, operators, and summary functions, you can create calculations that align directly with your organization's KPIs — without performing math manually outside of Insights.
Once created, a derived field becomes a permanent part of the data source it belongs to and is available to all users in your organization. It appears and behaves like any standard field in that data source.
Differences from standard fields
You cannot apply a summary function to a derived field
You cannot filter by a derived field
You cannot group by a derived field
Accessing the Derived Fields Manager
The Derived Fields Manager is accessible from the sidebar menu within Insights. Click the Derived Fields Manager icon to open the interface.
Creating a New Derived Field
1
Open the Derived Fields Manager from the sidebar.
Select a data source from the first drop-down. In most cases, Queue Segment Activity is the appropriate choice.
A second drop-down will appear, which can be used to select an existing derived field to edit. To create a new field, click + New Derived Field in the upper-right corner.
The field creation interface will load, where you can construct the derived field using the building blocks described below.
Building Block Toolbar Reference
The Derived Fields Manager uses a set of SQL building blocks to construct custom formulas. The toolbar provides buttons for each component; no deep SQL knowledge is required.

Description |
|---|---|
Add Group |
Wraps selected components in parentheses, controlling the order of operations. Use groups to ensure complex formulas evaluate in the correct sequence — especially when combining multiple fields before applying an operator. |
Add Field |
Inserts a field block. Use the drop-down that appears to select the data source field you want to use in the formula. |
+ − / × |
Mathematical operators: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. |
= < > >= <= <> != !< !> |
Comparison operators: equals, less than, greater than, greater than or equal to, less than or equal to, greater than or less than, not equal to, not less than, not greater than. |
int |
Inserts an integer input field for entering a specific numerical value. |
NOW() |
Returns the current system date and time. Useful for time-based calculations. |
Separator |
Inserts a separator for use in formulas that utilize the |
Clear |
Clears all current progress and resets the formula builder. |
